How to Handle Separation Anxiety in Preschoolers
March 5, 2025
Separation anxiety is a common experience for young children, particularly during major transitions like starting preschool. It's natural for toddlers and preschoolers to feel anxious when they have to leave their parents and caregivers. This anxiety can manifest in various ways, such as crying, clinging, or refusing to let go.
While it's important to be patient and understanding, there are several strategies you can implement to help your child manage separation anxiety:
Prepare your child in advance
Talk to your child about preschool and what to expect. Describe the environment, the activities, and the people they will meet. You can even visit the school together beforehand to help your child feel more familiar with the surroundings.
Establish a consistent routine
A predictable routine can provide a sense of security and comfort for your child. Maintain a consistent bedtime routine and a regular drop-off and pick-up schedule for preschool.
Create a warm and loving goodbye
Make drop-off a positive experience by giving your child a warm hug and a reassuring kiss. Say goodbye cheerfully and confidently, and avoid lingering or sneaking away.
Provide a comfort object
Allow your child to bring a favorite toy or blanket from home. This familiar object can provide a sense of comfort and security during the day.
Maintain open communication with the teachers
Keep in touch with your child's teachers to learn about their day and any challenges they might be facing. This will help you understand their experiences and offer support.
Stay positive and reassuring
Reassure your child that you love them and will be back to pick them up soon. Avoid making promises you can't keep, such as staying until they stop crying.
Focus on the positive
After drop-off, talk to your child about the fun activities they participated in at preschool. Share stories and pictures to help them remember the positive experiences.
Remember, every child is different, and what works for one may not work for another. Be patient and understanding, and adjust your approach as needed. With time and consistency, your child will likely adjust to preschool and overcome their separation anxiety. If you're looking for a nurturing and supportive environment for your child, consider enrolling them in Prescolaire Early Learning Academy.
